Hatrock Guides Lake City Girls Past Lewiston, 60-47

Phil Hayes Correspondent

It’s a combination that’s been known to be deadly for Lake City opponents in the past.

Katie Hatrock’s passing to anybody who happens to be looking.

That combination proved to be fatal for Lewiston Thursday as the Timberwolves snatched a 60-47 Inland Empire League girls basketball victory from the Bengals before about 350 fans at Lake City.

The win gives Lake City an early lead in the IEL race with a 2-0 mark (12-2 overall) while Lewiston, which is expected to be the Timberwolves main competition in league play, goes to 1-1 in the IEL and 10-1 overall.

Hatrock, the T-Wolves 5-6 senior point guard, helped to break open a close game in the second half with some nice passes while leading a pressure defense that came up with the key stops.

The chief beneficiaries of Hatrock’s generosity were junior wing Lindsay Herbert and junior post Alison Asher.

Herbert, after a slow start, came on strong to finish with 19 points to lead Lake City while Asher was right behind with 18 points. Asher also had 14 rebounds and seven blocks.

Lake City head coach Dave Stockwell pointed to Hatrock as a key.

“She’s really coming into her own as a point guard,” Stockwell said. “Some of the other girls may get most of the accolades, but it’s her team.”

Lewiston jumped out to an early 6-0 lead but the T-Wolves fought back to close the gap to 10-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Lake City was able to stay close because of constant defensive pressure that led to 11 first-half Bengal turnovers and the T-Wolves took their largest lead of the half at 25-20 with 13 seconds to go on a 3-pointer by Herbert.

It was Asher who kept the T-Wolves in the game in the first half.

While most of her teammates were having trouble finding the mark, the 6-4 Asher was getting open inside, scoring 11 first-half points on 5 of 7 shooting.

“Alison kept us in it in the first half,” Stockwell said. “Lewiston has a good ball club, but she dominated them inside.”
