Snow Sport Report

Alpine skiing

With telemark events scheduled at two local ski areas, this weekend is as good a time as any to free your heels and get back to skiing’s soulful, Norwegian roots.

Schweitzer hosts a pair of ski races. Saturday: The U.S. Ski Team Passport Festival’s free, fun race on the Chair 1 Midway race course will follow morning registration. A U.S. passport is required. Sunday: Registration for the 16th annual Selkirk Telemark Classic is Saturday night at Eichardt’s Pub in Sandpoint or Sunday morning from 8 to 9:15 a.m. in the day lodge’s Caribou Room. The race, which includes events for all skiing levels, will follow. Info: (208) 263-6028.

There’s also a “Tele-Daze” telemark fest at 49 Degrees North on Saturday, with gear demonstrations from Mountain Gear and a race from 1 to 3 p.m. Info: (509) 325-9000.

Nordic skiing

“Skifest” is Sunday at the Mount Spokane Nordic Trails from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Folks can demo skis and snowshoes, as well as take free skating and classic lessons from Mountain Gear instructors. Info: (509) 325-9000.

Snowmobiling

Methow Valley snowmobile trails are 85 percent groomed and in great shape. Snowparks in the Conconuly, Methow Valley and Highway 20 areas have been plowed. Info: (509) 422-7324.

Warmer weather and melting snow at Mount Spokane has caused another spate of fallen trees. Park officials also say crusty snow has created less-than-ideal riding conditions. Want to help clear trees? Call the parks department at 456-4730.
