Lakeside Knocks Off Newport

Area girls

Lakeside combined old and new tendencies Friday to knock Newport from the unbeaten ranks.

Brianne Jolley, a la last year, scored a game-high 25 points to guide the Eagles to the 59-44 Northeast A League girls basketball victory in a matchup of 1996 State A Tournament participants.

Just as important was a new wrinkle Lakeside (9-1, 4-0) has added since claiming third place at last year’s State A. Linsey Heebink hit three of the Eagles’ seven 3-pointers. Newport (8-1, 3-1) made no long-range shots.

“This year we’re 14 percent higher on our 3-point shooting,” said Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz. “You can’t win just by going inside, putting it all on Brianne’s back.”

Jolley scored eight in the first 2:36 as the Eagles jumped ahead 10-0. Jolley went quiet in the second quarter, when Newport closed within four points for the third and final time, but her three quick baskets to open the second half resulted in a 35-26 lead.

The game featured six of the league’s top eight scorers. Schultz focused on guard Carey Sauer (23.3 points per game), asking Nikki Petticrew to hound the 6-foot-1 guard.

Sauer didn’t score until early in the second quarter. Although Sauer finished with 18, Schultz said Petticrew accomplished her mission.

Regarding fouls, the home court didn’t work in Lakeside’s favor. Heebink fouled out with 2:19 left, and Petticrew and Jessica Hatch were one foul away from joining her. Until Newport was forced to foul in the final 2 minutes, hoping Lakeside would miss free throws, Lakeside had 19 fouls to Newport’s seven.

“The ones we got early were silly fouls,” Schultz said. “When Nikki’s on the bench that really hurts us because she’s our leading rebounder.”

Newport outscored Lakeside 12-4 at the free-throw line but shot just 16 of 46 (35 percent) from the floor. Lakeside shot 24 of 45 (53 percent) for the game and 60 percent for the second half.

“I thought the girls regrouped in the second half,” Schultz said. “Newport had the momentum. You can’t let a talented team like Newport stay with you.”

Lakeside point guard Carrie Waddell had six rebounds, six assists and five steals. She scored just four, but had a three-point play midway through the fourth quarter to stop Newport’s final rally.

When the evening began, three area girls teams had perfect records. Lakeside cut the number to two, and will attempt to trim it to one (Cheney) tonight by beating Colfax on the road.
