Mother, Child Return A Bit Of Spilled Money

Associated Press

A mother came to police and spilled out cash and quarters totaling $19.53. A pupil at a Catholic school turned in 85 cents.

They were the first - and so far the only - people Friday to give back money scooped up from an armored truck that toppled on an overpass and rained more than $500,000 into into one of Miami’s poorest neighborhoods.

“I have children and I needed to set a good example,” said Faye McFadden, a mother of six who earns $5 an hour at a department store.

Herbert Tarvin, 11, said he heard his teachers at St. Francis Xavier Elementary School talking about Wednesday’s crash in Overtown and making the right decision. He went to police with his 85 cents.

Police also said Friday that poor people weren’t the only ones grabbing for cash. Witnesses reported seeing rush-hour commuters loading money bags into their cars and driving off while two Brink’s workers lay bleeding.

“Some motorists, instead of rendering aid, grabbed sacks of money and drove away,” said police spokesman Lt. Bill Schwartz. “These were people heading off to the office.”
