Native Iowan Raef LaFrentz had 10 of his 16 points in the second half for top-ranked Kansas and the unbeaten Jayhawks beat No. 8 Iowa State 80-67 Monday night.

Kansas (17-0, 4-0 Big 12) had a 17-4 run to finish the first half and held off the Cyclones throughout the second half.

Iowa State (11-2, 2-1) did not have a free throw attempt in the first half, but Kelvin Cato made one of two with less than a minute gone in the second half to get the Cyclones within 40-31.

But Cato, Iowa State’s 7-foot shot blocker, picked up his fourth foul on the next trip down the court and was out of the game until the 7:27 mark.

That allowed LaFrentz and Scot Pollard, given less than a 50 percent chance to start the game Monday morning after he sprained his ankle on Saturday at Baylor, to dominate the game.

Pollard had 10 points, as did Billy Thomas, while Jerod Haase finished with 11.

Shawn Bankhead led Iowa State with 15 points. Dedric Willoughby, the Cyclones’ leading scorer at 18 points a game, did not play in the second half.

Lester Earl, dismissed from the LSU basketball team earlier this month, has decided to attend Kansas and said he will begin classes Wednesday.

Earl was LSU’s No. 2 scorer and No. 3 rebounder when he was dismissed from the team on Jan. 4 by coach Dale Brown for violation of team rules.

(13) Duke 84, Campbell 59

At Durham, N.C., Roshown McLeod scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and the Blue Devils (12-4) held the Camels (5-8) to one basket during the first 11 minutes.

(19) Boston College 81, Georgetown 74

At Newton, Mass., Antonio Granger scored 19 points and the Eagles (11-2, 6-1) extended their best-ever Big East start with a win over the Hoyas (10-5, 3-4).
