Medical Lake Remains Unbeaten

Carlos Simmons saved his best for last to help Medical Lake slip past Chewelah 65-63 Tuesday and remain in first place in the Northeast A basketball standings.

Simmons was credited with 10 assists, including one in the last second that resulted in a Jeff Nichols layin and the two-point win.

The unbeaten Cardinals (11-0 overall, 6-0 in league) face another tough league test Friday when they play host to second-place Lakeside. Chewelah fell to 4-5 and 3-3.

Mark Rickard and Jason Baldwin combined for 45 points and put on an exhibition at the foul line for the North Division-leading Tigers (11-0, 9-0).

Rickard led Republic with 23 points and made 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. He also led the Tigers with 11 rebounds. Baldwin scored 22 and hit 11 of 12 from the line.

Curlew fell to 9-4 overall and remains in second place in the North at 6-3.

Tom DePonty hit two key free throws down the stretch and the Dragons survived a desperation shot by the Chargers for the win.

The second-place Dragons (9-4, 7-2) trailed 48-45 at the end of three, but crawled back slowly and took the lead for good with 1:40 left. St. George’s Dan Kuney led all scorers with 27.

Ryan Smith scored 17 points and came up with 12 rebounds to carry the Lions (2-10, 2-7) past the Mustangs (5-8, 4-5).

Columbia hit 20 of 30 shots from the field and came up with 19 steals. Ben Carlson led Northport with 14 points.

The Crusaders (6-7, 5-4) ran out to a 19-4 lead and were never threatened. St. Michael’s (3-10, 2-7) hit 2 of 16 shots in the first half.

Jeremy Affeldt scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to lead Northwest Christian. The Crusaders outrebounded St. Michael’s 38-22.

Bryan Argentino was a bright spot for the Warriors as he hit five 3-pointers and led the team with 23 points.

Tim Farris and Sheridan Pyeatt combined for 37 points to lead the South Division-leading Rangers (10-2, 8-1) past the Panthers (1-11, 1-8).

Farris scored 18 points and led the team in rebounding with eight. Pyeatt, a sophomore, hit 7 of 9 shots from the field and 5 of 6 from the foul line for his team-high 19 points.

The Lancers (7-6) scored the last 10 points of the game to run away from the Spartans (4-5).

Rosalia led 25-23 at halftime, but played most of the third quarter without 6-foot-6 Lucas Schmidt. Still, the Panthers trailed by just five, 48-43, with 4 minutes left before Liberty went on its tear.

The Lancers dominated the boards 40-20. Tim Horlacher led the way with 11.
