Shadle Wins A Bruiser Wins Without Basket In Fourth Quarter

There was a battle for second in the Greater Spokane League boys basketball standings Tuesday night but it seemed like Shadle Park and University suited up their football teams instead of their basketball teams.

Shadle Park came out on top at U-Hi, defeating the Titans 58-50 despite not making a field goal in the fourth quarter. The Highlanders clinched their sixth straight win by sinking 16 of 24 free throws in the fourth quarter.

“It was pretty physical, wasn’t it?” Shadle Park coach Darcy Weisner said. “In all seriousness, our defensive effort in the third quarter was good enough.”

The Highlanders (8-3, 6-1) outscored the Titans 17-7 in the third quarter to open a 42-33 lead and the way the teams were playing defense, that was more than the Titans (6-4, 4-2) could overcome.

“We contested shots real well,” Weisner said. “That’s one of the things we talked about. They’re going to get good shots, they’re a good team, but we wanted them to rush their shots or look through us.”

University made 10 of 18 shots for a 26-25 lead at the half but only made 3 of 14 in the third quarter. The Titans had too many unforced turnovers among their 21 giveaways and allowed the Highlanders too many second shots.

“They play very good defense,” U-Hi coach Jay Humphrey said. “They’re very physical but you have to play through the bumps, rebound and run the offense. We just didn’t do that.”

The game was intense from the beginning and only got more intense as the referees allowed physical play. Soon the game resembled a clutch-and-grab hockey game.

Kerry Hipps, the first player off the bench, dropped a 3-pointer from the right corner to give Shadle Park a boost just before halftime. The Highlanders were only up by four late in the third quarter when Hipps made a 3 from the right wing and then converted a putback for the nine-point lead.

“He’s done that,” Weisner said. “He’s not afraid to take the big shot. I like that. That’s what you want an athlete to do.”

Hipps was one of three Highlanders with 11 points.

“I fill in wherever I’m needed,” Hipps said. “I got in and play hard on defense and the offense comes with it. I’m gaining confidence. With the team winning, I need to help out more.”

University was within three early in the fourth quarter but threw the ball away and did the same thing later after getting it back to four.

“Normally their scores are low. That’s fine with us, we like to control the ball,” Humphrey said. “But about 17 times we got the ball across halfcourt and threw it away. We’ve been surviving with 15 to 16 turnovers. Jump that up a little bit and it gets us.”

Despite the physical play, Hipps said it was a good game.

“It was a battle but they’re pretty nice,” he said. “It wasn’t cheap. They were playing hard and we were playing hard.”
