Charity-Justice Theme Set For Conference

“Beyond Rhetoric: A Call to Charity and Justice” is the theme of the keynote address to be presented by the Rev. Jeffrey Terry, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane, at the Eastern Washington Legislative Conference. The session is Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 12th and Grand Boulevard.

The conference begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, with two workshops on the topic “Organizing for Faith-Based Advocacy.” The session Saturday, Feb. 1, beginning at 8:30 a.m., will be devoted to a review of “The Church’s Legislative Agenda.”

Workshops following lunch will address issues such as welfare reform, health care, affordable housing, immigration and refugee justice, civility in politics, and education for youth. Registration fee for the conference is $18 per person, with group rates and some scholarships available.

Child care will be available if requested in advance.

Class will be on ‘7 Habits’

Stephen Covey’s popular book, “Seven Habits of Hightly Effective People,” will be the subject of a four-week class that begins Jan. 23 at the Spokane Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

Classes will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. each Thursday. There is a $5 fee, and participants are asked to preregister by calling 325-6383.

The church is also holding a weekend workshop on racial justice called “Creating a Jubilee World.”

The event is from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Jan. 24 and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 25.

The Jan. 24 workshop is free. There is a $5 fee for the Jan. 25 workshop, which includes lunch.

Child care will be available for the Jan. 25 workshop only.

Studies in Switzerland to be topic

Next Tuesday, Manito United Methodist Church will host a talk by Marijke Haworth about her studies at the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey near Geneva, Switzerland. While there, she worked with people from 33 different countries.

Haworth’s presentation will follow a soup and bread supper at 6 p.m.

The church is located at 3220 S. Grand Blvd.

Gideons representative will speak

Bob VanDyke of the Gideons will be speak at the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services Sunday at Cheney United Methodist Church, 204 Fourth.

He will discuss the work of the Gideons and their worldwide Bible distribution program.
