Bledsoe Knows He’ll Be Needed

The Green Bay Packers are where most everyone figured they would be - in the Super Bowl. They have the highest-scoring offense in the National Football League as well as a defense that allowed the fewest points.

To stay in the game, Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe will have to step forward and put points on the board, because no matter how well the New England defense plays, Green Bay, with two-time MVP Brett Favre at the helm, should be doing its share of dancing in the end zone.

Bledsoe knows there’s plenty of weight on him.

“If we’re going to win, I’m going to have to play very well, and as an entire offense we’re going to have to score points,” Bledsoe said.

The starting Green Bay secondary had 18 interceptions in the regular season. In two playoff victories, the Packers allowed two touchdown passes but picked off five others.

“They’re good hitters,” Bledsoe said of the Packers’ defensive backfield. “They make a lot of plays; they’re very opportunistic. They’ve caused a lot of turnovers.

“Green Bay’s defense is very sound, they’re very solid. They don’t make mistakes and they don’t give you plays as a result. Offenses that are successful against them are offenses that are very, very consistent, that consistently take what Green Bay gives you, which is usually short stuff in the front of them, and offenses that run the ball a bit.”

Accuser admits Irvin absent

The woman who accused two Dallas Cowboys players of sexual assault admitted in a written confession that her sex with Erik Williams was consensual and that Michael Irvin was not present when it happened, according to a Dallas police affidavit.

Nina Shahravan’s admission to police was released Friday in an affidavit used to obtain a perjury warrant for fake allegations of a Dec. 29 attack at Williams’ home. She turned herself in Thursday.

The 23-year-old former topless dancer’s signed confession has not been made public.

In the four-page affidavit, police say Shahravan admitted she withdrew her claims after being confronted with evidence that Irvin was not at Williams’ north Dallas house that night.

Seifert rejects Rams

George Seifert went hunting for ducks Friday, but only after the St. Louis Rams went hunting for Seifert.

In search of a coach, the Rams contacted Seifert and made him a five-year offer one St. Louis source termed “startling.” Seifert turned down the proposal, a move that might not have caused ripples except for this: The Rams never contacted the 49ers to gain permission to speak to Seifert.

Though Seifert resigned as coach of the 49ers this week, he is under contract with the club through 1997. That means anyone interested in hiring Seifert before next year must gain permission to speak to him.

The Rams interviewed Jim Mora on Friday, but sources say they are more interested in Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.

Boselli added to Pro Bowl

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Tony Boselli was named to the AFC Pro Bowl team, joining teammate wide receiver Keenan McCardell, who was chosen for the team last month.

Boselli was the AFC’s first alternate at offensive tackle and he replaces Denver’s Gary Zimmerman, who has a shoulder injury.
