Cathedral Choir Readies Repertoire For The Pope

Nina Culver Correspondent

In anticipation of performing for Pope John Paul II in May, choir members at Spokane’s Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes are memorizing songs, some in Latin, and getting their passports together.

“It’s the chance of a lifetime,” says choir member Barbara Votava. “I’m very excited about it.”

Votava is looking forward to seeing the sights in Rome and traveling with Bishop William Skylstad, “who is apparently an excellent tour guide.”

The choir has been holding extra rehearsals and learning new material, says cathedral music director James Barrett. First on the list is learning spirituals, which are popular in Italy.

They also have been working on a cappella songs since they can’t bring their usual musical accompaniment. “Arrangements there aren’t conducive to using the organ,” says Barrett.

A special performance of Ira Levin’s mystery-thriller “Deathtrap” will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Spokane Civic Theater, 1020 N. Howard, to help raise money for the trip. Tickets are $15 and are available at the cathedral, 1115 W. Riverside, or at the door.

Anyone who wishes to accompany the choir on the concert tour and pilgrimage is welcome, says Barrett, but must pay the entire cost of the trip, $2,350. For more information, contact Diane at 326-9501 or Barrett at 535-6934.
