Get A Hunch, Bet A Bunch

With 20 winners in the season’s first 44 races, it could be time to boast. But, in truth, such a high percentage of wins should have produced a greater rate of return. Although short fields have been a factor, money management, as usual, is the greater issue. It’s always better policy, particularly with real money, to wager more money on fewer horses.

Fresh snow should support the early season bias toward speed. However, Sister Charlene, who only wins wire-to-wire, faces other front-runners in the feature. Shad Roe Dee just looks like the best horse in the sixth race. The eighth is a grab bag with a potential for nice payoffs no matter which horses come in.

Here are today’s selections:

FIRST: $5 daily doubles pairing BE EXPLOSIVE, PASO PANDY and BREADWINNER with BE RITE SWEET ($15).

THIRD: $10 to win on KEG DISCO. Divide any winnings between EXSPECIALLY and SHAD ROE DEE.

FOURTH: $20 to win on EXSPECIALLY.

SIXTH: $20 to win on SHAD ROE DEE.

SEVENTH: $5 quinellas pairing SEATTLE SWIRL with SHEMYA POPCORN, SISTER CHARLENE and QUACKGRASS SALLY ($15).

EIGHTH: $1 trifectas using every combination of TOUCHMENT, SEVEN EXITS, WHISKEY ROUNDS and HUNTER’S BARBARIAN ($12).

Original bankroll: $2,000.

Sunday’s result: Won $31.

Present bankroll: $2,295.80.
