Jennifer Simonson National Finalist

Jennifer Simonson, a member of Ritzville’s Future Farmers of America, was one of four national finalists to compete for the Agricultural Sales and/or Service Proficiency Award at the National Future Farmers of America Agricultural Issues Forum in Kansas City, Mo.

Simonson, 19, is the daughter of Paul and Carol Simonson.

The Liberty FFA Chapter of Serena Prince, Mindy Bareither, Polly Anderson, Annie Redding, Charlie Tellessen, Travis Greenwalt and coach Curt Greenwalt also attended the national convention.

For the seventh consecutive year, Gonzaga University School of Law has advanced a team to the national moot court competition, scheduled this year for Jan. 27-30 in New York City.

GU’s team of Mary Gaston, Tom DeBoer and Carl Warring captured the regional title last November. Gaston was named top oralist, and DeBoer, the No. 2 oralist. This is the second consecutive year Gonzaga has won the regional competition. The second team of John Kennedy, Danielle Ryman and Troy Nelson advanced to the quarter-finals of the regional competition.

Both teams are coach by William Clarke, associate dean, and Stephen Sepinuck, associate professor.

The Girl Scouts Inland Empire Council elected it board of directors for 1997.

New officers are: Barbara Smith, secretary; and Sue Price, treasurer.

Members-at-large are: Elizabeth Marsalis, Sharon Stern, Joie Wienclaw, Kelly Etzel, Kathy Manion, Frankie Moore, Jody Hamilton and Keri Jujii.

Jennifer Green and Leslie Mitchel, senior Girl Scouts, were elected to serve on the board .

Ryan Turner, son of Scott and Tricia Turner, Spokane, was named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students.

Turner has been a scholar/ athlete for three years at Gonzaga Prep, where he’s a senior active in football, wrestling and track.

Michael Robinson, Valleyford, took first place in the Country/Folk division of regional events of the Songwriter’s Showcase.

Other area winners include Stan Smith, Newport, Wash., second; and Jeff Kersey, Chewelah, Wash., third place.

Matt Ebel, Spokane, placed third in the Jazz/Pop/Alternative division.

Lela Danley, Spokane won the People’s Choice Award.

Don Kagele, Ritzville, received the 1996 President’s Award for “his hard work and support of the Washington State Farm Bureau, the Adams County Farm Bureau and the issues concerning farmers and ranchers.”

Kagele represents District 4 on the bureau’s executive board and is representative for Adams County on the board of directors. He is also chairman of the policy development committee for the Adams County Farm Bureau.

Anne Shirley Linden, Wellpinit, had her poem, “Prairie Pansies,” published in the National Library of Poetry’s winter anthology of “The Colors of Thought.”

Three students in Pullman’s Lincoln Middle School were named Students of the Month for October, sponsored by the Pullman Kiwanis Club: Jenny Lehmitz, sixth grade, and Harvey Lehmitz, eighth grade, are children of Tamera and Harvey Lehmitz.

Erin McCullough, seventh grade, is daughter of Esther and James McCullough.

Kristen Comer, a graduate of Central Valley High School and Western Washington University, leaves Friday for Thailand and a two-year mission with the Peace Corps.

During her service, she will be teach primary classes, train teachers, and work with schools, government and other organizations to improve English, health, and physical programs and curriculums.
