Sandpoint’s Pogue Keeps U.S. Afloat In Snowboarding

Anton Pogue, a 1986 graduate of Sandpoint High School, has been the top American on the World Cup Tour for snowboarders this winter.

Pogue, 26, who made the switch from skiing to snowboarding six years ago, has registered two fourth-place finishes in the slalom this season.

The most recent was Jan. 12 in Lenngriess, Germany, where he trailed two Swiss and an Austrian.

Pogue, the coverboy on the premier issue of Performance Snowboard Report and a contributor to the magazine, was the 1992 and ‘94 U.S. national slalom champion. During the 1995 season, when he suffered a broken leg, he joined the first U.S. Snowboard team. He was second in the national slalom in ‘96.

His wife, Jeanne, an ‘87 Sandpoint High grad, also is a national-caliber snowboarder.

Baseball

Former Washington State coach Bobo Brayton and three former Spokane Indians are among the clinicians for the Northwest Baseball Coaches Clinic Feb. 22-23 at Redmond (Wash.) High School.

Also on the staff are Edo Vanni, Bob Stoddard and Bob Stinson.

Eastern Washington had 32 athletes honored as the Big Sky Conference announced its all-academic teams for football, volleyball, cross country and golf.

Softball

Girls ages 13-16 interested in joining two Spokane teams that will tour Australia in late summer are invited to a tryout next Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Spokane Falls Community College gymnasium.

Teams of 13-14- and 14-16-year-olds will be formed for the Aug. 6-18 trip.

Speed/strength

Competition will be held in vertical jump reach, 20-yard sprint, bench press and deadlift at the Performance Athletics’ Speed and Strength Meet Feb. 23 at Ferris High School.

Clay Miller, a sophomore from Mead High, finished eighth in the 200-meter individual medley at the U.S. Grand Prix in Federal Way, Wash.

Wrestling

Spokane Junior Wrestling will register youngsters for its winter season on Jan. 28 from 6-7:15 p.m. at eight sites.

The program is for those in grades K-6 (ages 5 through 12; cannot be in junior high). Registration will be held at Central Valley, East Valley, West Valley, University and Ferris high schools, Gonzaga Prep, Mead Junior High and Mountain View Middle School. Cost is $35.
