Vandals Battle Back, Beat Broncos In Ot Idaho Triumphs At Boise St. For The First Time Since 1987

The University of Idaho women’s basketball picked up a rare victory in a close ballgame Sunday, edging in-state rival Boise State 69-65 in overtime.

On the brink of losing its fifth consecutive game, Idaho came from seven points down in the final 2:22 of regulation play and jumped to a quick lead in the extra period.

The Vandals, who earned their first Big West Conference triumph, won here for the first time since 1987.

Alli Nieman led Idaho (6-9, 1-4) with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Kelli Johnson and Michelle Greenwood each had 14 points. Greenwood, a senior, put in four points in the final 2:22 of the second half to help force the game into overtime.

Kim Brydges collected 16 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for Boise State (4-10, 2-1). Post Falls native Heidi Umthum was the only other Bronco in double figures with 12 points.

Boise State was ineffective offensively away from the basket. The Broncos sank just three field goals outside the key and failed to connect on any of their 15 attempts from 3-point range.

Idaho will return to action Thursday when it plays host to New Mexico State, the Big West’s East Division leader.
