Syracuse’s Outside Shooter Helps Gun Down Villanova

Men’s Top 25

Marius Janulis scored all 15 of his points on 3-pointers and Todd Burgan had 10 points in his return from a seven-game suspension as Syracuse beat No. 12 Villanova 62-60 in men’s college basketball Monday night at Philadelphia.

The Orangemen (11-7, 2-5 Big East) held the Wildcats (14-4, 5-3) without a field goal over the final 7 minutes.

Otis Hill’s basket with 2:37 remaining gave the Orangemen a 62-57 lead and they were able to hold off a final rally by the Wildcats.

Villanova freshman Tim Thomas, who finished with 23 points, missed a running jumper with 5 seconds left. The Wildcats got the rebound, but a desperation shot by Alvin Williams missed at the buzzer.

Jason Cipolla added 15 points for Syracuse, which welcomed back Burgan after his suspension for violating university rules.

(20) Texas Tech 70, Okla. St. 64 (OT)

Rayford Young’s five straight points late in overtime and Tony Battie’s dominance throughout the game sparked the Red Raiders (13-3, 5-1 Big 12) to a comeback victory over the Cowboys (9-7, 1-4 Big 12) at Lubbock, Texas.

Oklahoma State took the early lead in overtime on Maurice Robinson’s three-point play. As it did for most of the game, Texas Tech trailed until Young’s heroics.

The freshman guard followed two missed free throws by Joe Adkins of Oklahoma State with a 3-pointer that gave Texas Tech a 66-64 lead with 1:31 left. A minute later, Young missed a driving layup, snared his own rebound and put the ball back up for the clinching basket.
