Us West Expands Mobile-Phone Service

US West Communications has won licenses to provide a new mobile-phone service to customers in 53 markets in its 14-state region, company officials said Monday.

Company officials said the PCS, or personal communications service, will provide customers with security from eavesdropping.

In addition, US West will integrate the new service with existing wireline services, which will enable customers to connect mobile phones with computers, fax machines, pagers and wired phones.

US West is expected to begin offering mobile-phone services in some of its markets by the end of 1997. It could take the company several more years to introduce the service in every market, company officials said.
