Veteran Broadcaster Shelved By Surgery

By The Spokesman-Review

Gonzaga University is scrambling to find radio personalities to fill in for longtime play-by-play announcer Dick Wright, who was hospitalized last week because of a recurrence of pancreatic cancer.

Wright, who has done play-by-play on GU broadcasts for 14 years, underwent surgery last week and missed GU’s West Coast Conference road trip to San Diego and San Francisco.

In his absence, the school’s director of public relations, Dale Goodwin, handled play-by-play of the San Diego game. KTRW (970 AM), the Bulldogs’ flagship station, picked up a feed of Saturday’s game against USF from the Dons’ radio network.

Wright was released from the hospital Saturday, but will not be available for either tonight’s game against Loyola Marymount or Saturday’s against Pepperdine.

“The surgery was a little more extensive than they thought it was going to be,” Wright said from his home, where he was resting Wednesday afternoon.

Wright, who expects to undergo additional non-surgical treatment for his cancer in the near future, said he hopes to accompany the Bulldogs to Los Angeles next week.

GU sports information director Oliver Pierce said he was unsure who will handle play-by-play of tonight’s game, but added that Paul Seebeck, host of KTRW’s Sports Central, is scheduled to do Saturday’s Pepperdine game.
