Hyett Has Record 20 Assists In Win

From Staff And Wire Reports

Area women

Jade Hyett set Pacific-10 Conference and Washington State University women’s basketball records with 20 assists in the Cougars’ 79-53 victory over California Thursday at Bohler Gym in Pullman.

The Cougars (7-8, 1-5) were led by the 18 points of freshman Jennifer Ludwicki. Giving a hand were juniors Amy Saneholtz with 17 points and seven rebounds and Yvonne Kunze with 16 points.

California (6-10, 2-5) tried to rally behind the scoring of senior Patrycja Czepiec, who had 15 points, while freshman Geneva McDaniel came off the bench for 11.

WSU went into the second half with a six-point lead, 40-34, before boing on a 12-point run after intermission. The largest lead, 27 points, came when the Cougars pulled ahead 71-44 with 5 minutes remaining.

“I am pleased with how everybody stepped up and got after the basketball tonight,” WSU coach Harold Rhodes said. “It was a much improved job of rebounding on the defensive end. We kept them to nine boards and our goal is 10 so we did a great job there.”

WSU outrebounded Cal 38-25 and had just 19 turnovers to the Bears’ 25.

The Cougs had 25 assists to Cal’s nine, thanks to Hyett.

“They were very nice passes. I though she did a much better job of being patient and allowing those things to open up,” Rhodes said. “It was one of the best displays … I have ever seen by a point guard.”

The Cougars take on third-ranked Stanford on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Bohler. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports Network.
