Eagles Trip No. 1 Blackhawks

Frontier League girls

Now West Valley wears the bull’s-eye.

Coach Mark Kuipers suggested as much Saturday after his Eagles (10-2, 5-0) won their 10th straight game by dumping Class AA top-ranked Cheney 58-46 at Cheney.

Angie Kallas hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 18 for WV, which handed the Blackhawks (12-1, 4-1) just their second Frontier League loss in three years.

“We haven’t had any votes (in the state poll) but we knew last year’s games with Cheney were close,” said Kallas, a senior guard who also hounded league scoring leader Anna Getz.

Getz (22.5 ppg), who had twice scored 27 in league games, finished with 17 but hit just 5 of 20 from the floor, including 3 of 13 on 3-pointers.

Getz’s performance was typical for Cheney. The Blackhawks shot 12 percent from the field in the first half and 13 of 60 (22 percent) for the night. Cheney’s Kara Weitman (13.3 ppg) finished 0 for 8 from the floor before fouling out.

“I don’t know if the ranking had anything to do with this game,” said Cheney coach Marty Jessett, who starts four underclassmen. “We just had a lot of shots we didn’t convert on.”

Kuipers, sensing an ultraphysical game, had his team practice against the school’s boys C squad.

“I’m really proud of the fact that when Cheney made runs at us we were able to keep them away,” Kuipers said.

Kallas and Sherry Shollenberger hit a pair of 3-pointers apiece to stake WV to an 11-point lead after one quarter. Cheney crept within six points with 2:30 left in the half, despite being 2 for 21 from the floor at that point.

Kallas hit two more long-range shots to build a 13-point edge halfway through the third quarter. The Blackhawks looked primed for a serious run early in the fourth when two Getz free throws made the score 39-32, but Dawn Salfer scored four quick points to lead a 10-0 run.

“Every night our scoring is pretty balanced,” Kuipers said. “We don’t have a 20-point-a-game player.”

“Our kids were down but I told them it’s not the end of the world,” said Jessett, whose team was outrebounded 45-25. “We’ll play them again in league, then probably again at district.”
