Burglars Get Court’s Full Attention Thieves Break Into Judge’s Lake Cabin

Considering the victim, these burglars are skating on thin ice.

Sometime in the past 10 days, thieves used snowmobiles to get to cabins on the west side of lower Twin Lake. The burglars took two chain saws, a CD player, a VCR and a battery charger from a cabin and a shop belonging to Kootenai County District Judge Gary Haman.

There are no roads to the cabins. It is being speculated that the person or persons zipped across the frozen lake to get to the vacation homes - the preferred method for cabin owners to reach the area in winter.

A Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department report says Haman discovered the break-in Sunday when he hiked in to his place. He checked other cabins and found eight others also had been burglarized.

That includes a cabin belonging to Haman’s parents.

Haman, who frequently passes judgment on convicted burglars and other criminals, didn’t want to comment on the thefts. But the toll at his place alone totals $1,170, according to the sheriff’s report.

Haman told investigators the burglars broke a backdoor window to get into the cabin. They also kicked down an interior door.

The burglars apparently ransacked the cabin and stole the VCR and CD player. However, they left the television behind.

The burglars also broke a window to gain access to the shop.

Haman reported finding several sets of snowmobile tracks around the cabins.
