Charges Expected In Graffiti Spree Teens Admit To Spraying Cars And School Buildings

Spokane County prosecutors expect to file charges within the next two weeks against a pair of Valley youths whose gang-related graffiti spree earlier this month caused an estimated $2,000 in property damage.

Detectives say the 13- and 14-year-old Central Valley School District students have admitted to the three-hour long spree.

The two are accused of spray painting obscenities and gang slogans on cars in the Sherwood Forest area, and on buildings at University High School and at the University City Shopping Center.

The two youngsters, who are white, were confronted by their junior-high assistant principal just days after the vandalism appeared. He called detectives after he was alerted by a tip from another student.

Now, prosecutors are considering either filing up to 10 separate misdemeanor charges against the boys, or combining the charges into a single felony charge.

Bob Schaber, resource officer at University High School, said the paintings on his school’s outdoor restrooms and concession facility near the football stadium were cleaned up before most U-Hi students even noticed them. He estimated damage at U-Hi was between $300-$400.

The 14-year-old was suspended and the 13-year-old was expelled from school, the assistant principal said.
