Fire Guts North Side Apartment

From Staff And Wire Reports

With the exception of her two pet parakeets, Janet A. Shontell lost all of her belongings in an apartment fire that started early Thursday in north Spokane.

Shontell, who was not injured in the fire at 3024 E. Hoffman, did not have renter’s insurance, according to Spokane Fire Batallion Chief Joe Singleton. A local Red Cross shelter is providing her with temporary housing.

The fire already had destroyed Shontell’s first-floor unit when firefighters arrived at the 2-1/2-story, 16-unit complex, Singleton said.

Five other tenants were temporarily evacuated from their apartments. No other units were destroyed.
