Two Cabinet Picks Face Delays

New York Times

Two of President Clinton’s nominees for Cabinet-level positions ran into probable delays Thursday in their quests for Senate approval, while another choice won easy confirmation and two others cleared committee hurdles.

The two who are likely to face delays are Alexis Herman, the nominee for labor secretary, and Anthony Lake, the president’s choice for director of central intelligence. Although the committees considering each nomination have demanded more information, it was by no means clear that the chances of Herman and Lake have worsened.

The likelihood of delays for two of Clinton’s choices came at the end of a day that saw his selection for secretary of commerce, William Daley, win near-unanimous confirmation. In addition, Federico Pena eased through a hearing before the Senate Energy Committee on his nomination to head the department of energy, while Charlene Barshefsky won unanimous backing from the Senate Finance Committee to become U.S. trade representative.
