Disney Attacked Again, This Time For Mister Magoo

Bloomberg News

Walt Disney Co.’s planned movie revival of the nearsighted Mister Magoo cartoon character has drawn a protest from the National Federation of the Blind.

The association passed a resolution requesting that the entertainment giant halt production of a movie about Mister Magoo, who is accident-prone because of his nearsightedness. The group claims the character fosters bad impressions about the capabilities of the blind.

“The Disney people have dragged Mister Magoo back from richly deserved obscurity in the hope that Americans will think it’s funny to watch an ill-tempered and incompetent blind man stumble into things and misunderstand his surroundings,” said Marc Maurer, president of the 50,000-member consumer group.

Disney angered religious groups recently with some of its other entertainment fare. The Southern Baptist Convention voted last month to boycott Disney because of the company’s “gay friendly, anti-Christian” direction, after Disney’s ABC television network aired an episode of “Ellen” in which the title character revealed she’s a lesbian.
