Hoping to encourage parents to bring child safety seats for their little ones, American Airlines said Wednesday it will offer half-price tickets for children 2 and under.

Many parents carry small children on their laps to avoid buying a ticket for them, a practice safety experts agree is dangerous if an accident or turbulence occurs.

Robert W. Baker, American’s vice president for operations, said parents booking flights can buy a seat for their child for half of whatever price they pay.
