British Airways Strike Looming

British Airways says more than 100,000 travelers will likely be affected by a flight attendants’ strike due to start Wednesday.

Finding a seat on another airline during the busy summer season isn’t going to be easy.

“There is not a lot we can do,” spokeswoman Corrie Shanahan of Delta Air Lines said Monday. “Flights are generally full. It is peak season.”

Talks between British Airway’s management and union leaders broke down Sunday with both sides accusing the other of intransigence in the dispute over salaries and work rules.

A third of a million people are due to fly with the airline on Wednesday.

“At least two-thirds of those will be getting away as normal, about a third will be affected,” said BA spokeswoman Sarah Dewar.

The attendants have chosen to strike at the busiest flying time of the year. Rival air companies said they are unlikely to have the resources to soak up the extra demand.

British Airways’ passengers are “going to have problems getting seats,” predicted American Airlines spokeswoman Fiona O’Farrell.
