Public Hearing Today At Ewu To Focus On Genetics Education

A public hearing will be held today at Eastern Washington University to discuss genetics and how it should be taught.

The Washington state Department of Health is holding a series of open forums statewide on genetics education, whether it occurs in public schools or doctors offices. The hearings will help form a statewide genetics education plan.

The hearings are open to suggestions, comments and accounts of personal experiences with genetics information. Participants will discuss what information should be taught to Washington residents at different stages of life and who should provide the information.

The hearings will not touch on the ethics of genetics research. People who have received genetics counseling are strongly encouraged to participate.

Today’s three-hour hearing will be divided into two sessions - one at 4 p.m. and a second at 5:30 p.m. - in Room 137 of the Science Building at EWU.

Another hearing will be held Wednesday in the Tri-Cities; a third hearing will be Thursday in Seattle.
