!Ay Yi Yi!

Not all jellies are destined to be toppings for toast.

Mick’s Peppourri, a family business in Yakima, recently swept the top three places in the pepper jelly category at a national Chile Pepper magazine contest.

The winners were Death Valley, red and sweet-hot; Buzztail, green with a lingering, nasal-clearing heat; and Beyond Buzztail, an orange-hued habanero concoction that’s pure fire in a jar.

If you’re afraid of toasting your tongue, the Micks make some milder pepper jellies as well, including a spicy-sweet Ginger and a pleasantly zesty Horseradish.

Price: $6 to $9 for 8 ounces.

Available: In Spokane at Mango ‘n Chili, or by mail order (call 800-204-5679).
