Richard Stretch Polly Stretch Metaline, Wash.

Memorial service for Richard Joseph Stretch, 75, and Polly Ann Stretch, 74, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Selkirk High School in Ione, Wash. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. and Mrs. Stretch died Monday in a two-car accident on Highway 20 near their home.

Richard was born in Lewiston, Mont.

He served in the Army Air Corps as an airplane mechanic during World War II and later worked for Seattle City Light from 1957 to 1987. He worked as an inspector during the building of the Boundary Dam and later as a generation manager and power house supervisor in Newhalem, Wash., and at Boundary Dam.

He was a member of the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions, Metaline American Legion Post No. 144, and the Seattle City Light Employees Association.

Polly was born in Columbia, Tenn.

She graduated from Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., with a bachelor’s degree in home-economics.

She had worked as a substitute teacher and as a case worker for the Department of Social and Health Services in Bellingham. She was also a teacher’s aide at Selkirk High School from 1974 to 1978.

She was a member of the Young at Heart, Rebekahs, Homemakers of Metaline, the Garden Club and also served as a deacon for the United Church of Christ.

Mr. and Mrs. Stretch both worked as emergency medical technicians for the North Pend Oreille County First Response for 17 years and were members of the United Church of Christ, the Z-Canyon Stompers, American Association of Retired Persons, Elderhostel, Patrons of the Cutter Theater, Metaline Chamber of Commerce and the Washington Civil War Association.

They are survived by three daughters, Nancy “Lee” Doiron of Oceanside, Calif., Shirley Brandon of Pomeroy, Wash., and Lynne Bridges of Arlington, Wash.; and four granddaughters.

Mr. Stretch is also survived by his stepmother, Montana “Ann” Williams of Wickenburg, Ariz.; two sisters, Charmoine Spencer of Orofino, Idaho, and Naomi Leary of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; two stepsisters, Wilda Smith of Reno, Nev., and Ada Pearson of Lewiston, Idaho.

Mrs. Stretch is also survived by two brothers, Robert Thomas of Nashville, Tenn., and John Thomas of Stone Mountain, Ga.

Ellen Hagen Spokane

Visitation for Ellen S. Hagen, 68, is planned for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Heritage Funeral Home. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Miss Hagen, who was born at Deep Creek near Northport, Wash., died Tuesday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and worked for Hypotheek Dutch Bankers, and Mansur Materials and later as a fashion model in Spokane.

She had worked for Fidelity Savings and Loan for 35 years, achieving the position of assistant vice president.

Miss Hagen served as president of Spokane’s chapter of the National Association of Bank Women and as secretary and newsletter editor of the Inland Northwest Finlandia Foundation chapter. She was also a volunteer with the United Way.

Survivors include a sister, Erma Hagen Scotten of Spokane; and two brothers, Allen and Emil Hagen, both of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Anna Ogden Hall Shelter for Women or the Union Gospel Mission Shelter for Men.

Orville Hoaglund Spokane

No service will be held for Orville C. Hoaglund, 78. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hoaglund, a lifetime Spokane resident, died July 2.

He served in the Army during World War II and later worked as a concrete mason in the construction industry.

In 1969 he married June Wagner in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Hoaglund was a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 370 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Gary Hoaglund of Clark Fork, Idaho, Steve Hoaglund of Cheney and Randy Hoaglund of Spokane; a daughter, Kathy Cortez of Spokane; and seven grandchildren.

Howard Reiter Deer Park

Memorial service for Howard Eugene Reiter, 71, is set for 1 p.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church in Deer Park. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Reiter, who was born on the family farm in Deer Park, died Monday.

He graduated from Deer Park High School and attended Eastern Washington College.

Mr. Reiter served in the Army in Korea.

He worked on the family dairy farm and as a sales representative for Sherwin-Williams before retiring in 1983.

Mr. Reiter is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jean; two sons, Michael Reiter of Deer Park and Joel Reiter of Princeton, Minn.; two daughters, Jill Bray of Deer Park and Gail Ellis of Renton, Wash.; a sister, Eileen Brodrick of Priest River, Idaho; four brothers, Walter Reiter of Deer Park, Tom Reiter of Puyallup, Wash., Gordon Reiter of Vancouver, Wash., and Terry Reiter of Eagle, Idaho; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Earl McKenzie Palouse, Wash.

Service for Earl J. McKenzie, 74, will be at 1 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse.

Born near Palouse, Mr. McKenzie died Monday.

He graduated from Palouse High School and attended the University of Idaho.

Mr. McKenzie farmed with his brother in the Palouse area and did custom farming for the Goetz farms near Viola, Idaho. He retired in 1994.

He was a member of the Palouse Christian Church, Palouse Lions Club, Palouse Grange, Clearwater Search and Rescue, and the Civil Air Patrol.

Survivors include a brother, Harold McKenzie of Palouse; and a sister, Evelyn McLain of Potlatch, Idaho.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children or the Palouse Emergency Medical Services.

Isabel Lanning Spokane

Service for Isabel K. Lanning, 87, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Lanning, who was born in Wallace, Idaho, died Tuesday.

She attended school in Wallace and later moved to Spokane.

Mrs. Lanning worked as a secretary for the Small Business Administration, the Reconstruction Financial Corporation and the Federal Land Bank. She retired when she was 65.

She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Her husband of 47 years, Rush Lanning, died in 1995.

Mrs. Lanning is survived by a stepdaughter and son, Patricia and Kenneth Hines, both of Spokane; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Josephine Burgess Spokane

Graveside service for Josephine Burgess, 78, will be at 3 p.m. today at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burgess, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

She was a homemaker and a former Spokane resident. She had lived in Post Falls since 1965.

Mrs. Burgess was a member of the Spokane Sorrel Club.

Her husband, Forrest, died in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Forrest Burgess of Spokane; a daughter, Judith Phelan of Poulsbo, Wash.; a brother, Clarence Block of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Alfred Berluti Spokane

Memorial service for Alfred Berluti, 76, will be at 4:30 p.m. today at the Church of the Resurrection. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Berluti, who was born in Toledo, Ohio, died Monday.

He served in the Army and later worked as a photographer.

Mr. Berluti is survived by his wife, Janet; nine children, David Berluti of California, Kim Berluti of Portland, Allan and Tony Berluti, both of Nevada, Shari Scribellito of Detroit, Grant Sims of Reno, Nev., Johan Cox, Debra Dempsey, and Alfred Berluti, all of Spokane; two sisters, Lina Berluti and Anita Balsamo, both of Baltimore; and eight grandchildren.

Flora ‘Gwen’ Harper Spokane

Visitation for Flora Gwendoline ‘Gwen’ Harper, 89, is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rockwood Retirement Community. Private burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Miss Harper, who was born in England, died Tuesday.

She moved from England to Canada with her family.

She attended music school in Victoria, British Columbia, and took master classes with Sigismond Stojowski in Seattle. She later operated a piano studio in Victoria.

Miss Harper graduated from the University of Washington with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music and later received a master’s of education degree from Harvard University.

She taught in the Music Department at Eastern Washington University for 26 years.

In 1975 she retired and was named professor of music emeritus and continued to work in that capacity until 1980.

She took a one-year sabbatical in Paris where she wrote a treatise on the harpsichord composer Francois Couperan and studied the theory of music under Nadia Boulanger.

Miss Harper is survived by a brother, Barry Harper of Pepper Pike, Ohio.

Marcia Schultz Reardan, Wash.

Vigil service for Marcia Mae Schultz, 58, will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Reardan. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Spokane. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Schultz, who died Wednesday, was born in Tacoma.

She attended Washington State University, and in 1959 she married John Schultz in Fife, Wash.

Mrs. Schultz served on the Reardan Library Board, the Home Economics Advisory Committee, and was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church and Altar Society.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Joe Schultz of Edwall, Wash., and Andy Schultz of Reardan; a daughter, Pam Skites of Spokane; a brother, Ron Mettler of Federal Way, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders.

Diane Van Valkinburgh Rockford

Service for Diane Van Valkinburgh, 41, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Ms. Van Valkinburgh, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Monday.

She graduated from University High School and worked as a database coordinator in the computer industry.

She moved to Rockford four years ago and helped in the development of the SCOPE (Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort) program in Rockford.

Ms. Van Valkinburgh is survived by a son, Ryan Van Valkinburgh of Rockford; her father, Stanley Van Valkinburgh of Spokane; a brother, Dan Van Valkinburgh of Spokane; and two sisters, Lynda Liere of Gilroy, Calif., and Marsha Schwartzenberger of Spokane.

Jeremiah O’Brien Roseburg, Ore.

Memorial Mass for Jeremiah T. “Jerry” O’Brien, 88, will be at a later date. Myrtle Grove Funeral Home in Roseburg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. O’Brien, who was born in Butte, Mont., died June 22.

He graduated from Gonzaga High School.

Mr. O’Brien was one of the founders of Pennaluna Co., Inc., a stock brokerage company in Wallace, and later owned the company until he retired in 1992.

He moved to Oregon three years ago.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

Pamela Tomlinson Spokane

Memorial service for Pamela K. Tomlinson, 41, was Sunday at Otis Orchards Community Church.

Mrs. Tomlinson, who was born in Missoula, died Friday.

She was a 30-year Spokane resident and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Lewis; a son, Lewis Tomlinson Jr. of Spokane; three brothers, Earl, Enrique and Jon Herman, all of Spokane; and two sisters, Paula Krant and Pat Herman, both of Spokane.

Delwyn Thaves Sr. Lewiston

Memorial service for Delwyn Lamar Thaves Sr., 68, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lewiston Community Center. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thaves, who was born in Tekoa, Wash., died July 3.

He grew up working on a farm in Washington and enlisted in the Navy in 1942.

Mr. Thaves logged in North Idaho after his military service and started working for Potlatch Corp., in 1971. He retired in 1990.

He was a member of the Idaho Fiddlers, the Washington Fiddlers and the Banana Belt Fiddlers. He was also a member of several bowling leagues in the Lewiston area.

Survivors include two sons, Delwyn Thaves Jr. of Whidbey Island, Wash., and Denton Thaves of Lewiston; two daughters, Daureen Thaves of Grangeville, Idaho, and Dannette Payton of Kooskia, Idaho; a brother, Robert Thaves of Tekoa; two stepbrothers, Darrell Bruce of Alaska and Larry Bruce of Harvard, Idaho; three stepsisters, Marilyn Steiger of Ferdinand, Idaho, Barbara Christenson of Chelan, Wash., and Bonnie Lyons of Granite Falls, Wash.; and 11 grandchildren.

David Cronk Worley, Idaho

Service for David Lee Cronk, 60, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Worley Community Church.

Graveside service will follow at Worley Cemetery. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cronk, who was born in Spokane, died Monday.

He had served as a volunteer fire fighter for many years and recently served as a fire commissioner. Mr. Cronk was a member of the Worley Community Church and the Worley Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Penny; a son, Richard Cronk, and a daughter, Kay Manum, both of Spokane; a brother, Keith Cronk of Hayden Lake, Idaho; and 14 grandchildren.

Priscilla Andrews Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Priscilla Agnes Andrew, 80, at her request. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Andrews, a longtime Coeur d’Alene resident, died Wednesday. She was born in Nebraska.

She had worked as a bookkeeper at J.C. Penney, Western Auto and Cook’s Automotive.

Mrs. Andrews was a member of the Christian Science Church.

Her husband, Douglas, died in 1991.

Survivors include two brothers, Henry and Norman Henderson, both of Oregon; and four sisters, Elizabeth Harold of Colville, Wash., and Joyce, Hildegarde and Janota, all of Alaska.

Sandra Oosting Spokane

Service for Sandra Lee Oosting, 56, was Monday at the Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Oosting died July 1.

She was a lifetime Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Mrs. Oosting is survived by her husband of 29 years, Roger; two sons, Daniel Vandermuellen and Michael Tautz, both of Spokane; three daughters, Tammy Dahl of Kellogg, and Mary Catherine Rodenbaugh and Mindy Oosting, both of Spokane; her parents, Merle and Grant Long of Spokane; two sisters, Kathryn Plemons of Visalia, Calif., and Ethyl Bailey of Spokane; a brother, Ed Radtky of Orofino, Idaho; and 12 grandchildren.
