Whitney Porter Wins Young Writers Contest

Whitney Porter, a home-schooled student in Spokane, won first place in the third-grade category in the Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest.

Entries were judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling, and integration of copy and illustrations.

Albertson’s Inc. recently honored Debra Apker, director of the South Regal store, with the Service First Award for her excellent customer service. Award winners go the extra mile to help customers and give them service they deserve.

The North Spokane Exchange Club honored Larry Stanley with the Club’s Golden Deeds Award.

The award is given to people in the community who volunteer and is intended to recognize those whose efforts may go unnoticed, to motivate others to volunteer and set an example.

The club honored Larry because of his commitment to youth education. He is chair of the Spokane Area Advisory Consortium for Professional/ Technical Education and is tri-chair of the Education Council for the Spokane Area of Chamber of Commerce.

The following people have been awarded the Cadette Girl Scout Silver Award, which is the second highest award in Girl Scouting:

Spokane: Kathleen Korsmo, Lindsey Mabee and Rachel Browning.

Wilbur: Janessa Pilling and Anya Aubertin.

Their projects included building a trail system at Camp Four Echos, making improvements at nearby Girl Scout-owned Hawkins House, and sponsoring a Father-Daughter ‘50s dinner/dance and a kids craft event.

Glen Dow Academy of Hair Design students took top honors at the recent Washington State Cosmetology Association Competition at The International Beauty Show in Seattle.

Amy Hamm took first place in the Gent’s Haircutting competition.

Brian Ton-That took first in the Evening Fashion Comb Out and third in the Progressive Hair Cut and Style competitions.

Ken Red took second in the Gent’s Haircutting and Evening Fashion Comb Out competitions.

Tami Lane of Davenport, Wash., and Jolin Pilling of Wilbur, Wash., have been awarded the Senior Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award in Girl Scouting:

Both girls created and presented a multi-cultural seminar for their community that included a slide presentation as well as food and items from another culture.

Tami is the daughter of Sandi and Don Lane and a senior at Davenport High School. Jolin is the daughter of Jerry and Jolin Pilling and a junior at Christian Heritage.
