Lutheran Pastor Moving To Valley Post

Nina Culver Correspondent

After three years as associate pastor at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in north Spokane, Mike Sager is moving to the Valley’s Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where he will be senior pastor.

The Oregon native said that while moving was a difficult decision, he’s looking forward to the new challenges and different dynamics that his new, smaller parish will bring.

“It’s a different ministry out there than here,” Sager said of the Valley.

“We look forward to going out there.”

Holy Trinity, 2511 S. Pines, is in a fast-growing area, said Sager, and the emphasis will be more on reaching out to the community. Best of all, Sager and his family don’t have to relocate very far and can still easily keep in touch with friends. “We’re really excited to be staying in the area.”

Prince of Peace was Sager’s first posting as a pastor after spending five years as a CPA. The idea of becoming a pastor came to him one day, Sager said, and he spent a year making the decision on what to do with his life.

Sager said he wants to bring the Gospel into people’s everyday lives instead of it being something they listened to briefly every Sunday. “I really felt called to make the connection for some people,” he said “I feel like this is what I’m supposed to be doing.”

Sager said he believes that more people are becoming pastors later in life after having a secular career. When he attended Wartburg Seminary in Iowa, a lot of his fellow seminarians were in their 30s and were changing careers.

Sunday marks Sager’s last day at Prince of Peace, and he will take a three-week vacation with his family before assuming his duties at Holy Trinity on Aug. 5.
