More Troops Removed From Border Patrol

Compiled From Wire Services

The use of U.S. troops to patrol the Mexican border against drugs has been suspended along an additional 190-mile stretch while authorities investigate the slaying of a teenage goat herder by a Marine.

The suspension affects El Paso and Hudspeth counties in Texas and New Mexico’s entire border with Mexico, the Border Patrol said Friday.

Previously, patrols were stopped along 420 miles of the Texas-Mexico border shortly after Esequiel Hernandez Jr., 18, was shot May 20 by a Marine on anti-drug duty in Redford.

The Marines said Hernandez fired his rifle twice and was about to fire again when Cpl. Clemente Banuelos opened fire. Hernandez’s family said he carried the rifle to protect his goats and sometimes shot at targets.
