Reunion Offers Classic ‘Cagney & Lacey’

John Martin New York Times Syndicate

Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly are reunited in “Cagney & Lacey: The Return” on CBS at 9.

Following her husband Harve’s (John Karlen) heart attack, Lacey (Daly) dusts off her detective badge in this 1994 program and returns to police work. She helps Cagney (Gless) investigate a gun heist in which a cop was murdered.

This is vintage “Cagney & Lacey,” right down to the familiar scenes of the two having heated heart-to-heart discussions in the women’s washroom.

Highlights

“The Nanny,” CBS at 8: While bar-hopping, Fran (Fran Drescher) meets Mr. Right (Jon Stewart), who, unfortunately, turns out to be her cousin.

Droll Spalding Gray guest-stars in this episode from January as a therapist that Maxwell (Charles Shaughnessy) encourages Fran to see to work out her obsession with marriage.

A second repeat follows at 8:30.

“Grace Under Fire” ABC at 8: The network repeats a crossover night in which characters from “Coach” (at 8:30), “The Drew Carey Show” (at 9) and “Ellen” (at 9:30) end up in Las Vegas, Nev.

Fans will get a kick out of seeing Drew Carey and Brett Butler on “Ellen.”

But the February sweeps stunt doesn’t do much to elevate the individual shows.

“TV’s Funniest News Outtakes,” FOX at 8: We all know that some newscasts are a joke to begin with. Here’s a collection of crackups and mishaps that show news in its most hapless light. Repeat.

Parents’ Pick

“The Living Edens,” KSPS at 7: “Namib: Africa’s Burning Shore” is a splendid armchair journey to one of the earth’s hottest, driest places.

But it’s the coastline region of Southwest Africa where the real action is found.

You’ll be amazed by the fur seals, jackass penguins and black cape cormorants.

Cable Calls

“Our Mother’s Murder” (1997), USA at 9: Roxanne Hart turns in a convincing performance as newspaper heiress Anne Scripps Douglas, murdered in 1994 by her estranged husband (James Wilder of “Melrose Place”).
