American Legion A Playoffs Continue Today At Whitworth
A pair of North Side baseball teams are among four who have qualified for American Legion A League baseball playoffs.
Tony Roma from Shadle Park shared the South Division title with a 14-2 record and plays McDonald’s from Mount Spokane High tonight at 6 at Whitworth College.
McDonald’s shared the North Division title with Panorama Twins from Colville with a 10-4 mark.
Panorama played South co-champ Food Rainbow/Carsten’s Marine Wednesday.
First two games are loser-out with the survivors playing a best of three series. All games are at Whitworth College.
Friday’s game is at 6 p.m. and on Saturday the games are at 10 a.m. and, if necessary, at 1 p.m. to determine the league champion.
“That’s the end of the season for them,” said league president Dennis Thompson. “We’re the only ones who (have an A league) and there’s no place for them to go.”
Not so the AA and AAA leagues, whose playoffs run July 23-28. Winners will qualify for respective Junior State tournaments in Mount Vernon and Senior State tourneys in Selah.
Top four finishers in the Senior league will play a series of three best-of-three playoffs to determine the state entrant.
Included will be current leader Blue Devils, which last week won three of four games over the Bandits, split a twin bill with the Cannons and lost two of three games to the Royals.
Ryan Corigliano hit safely in eight games and had 12 total. Jeff Lafferty had eight hits.
Corigliano had five doubles, Lafferty hit his third home run of the summer.
In the Junior League, each division winner receives a bye and the second- and third-place teams meet in a loser-out game, followed by three best-of-three series to decide a state entrant.
Playoff hopefuls include current South Division runnerup Eagle Hardware/Pepsi from Shadle Park.
Three North Side teams, Hess/Wheeler from Mead, B&C Telephone/Dix from Lakeside and Downtown Toyota from North Central are also in the playoff picture.
Steelers second in Colorado
The U-14 River City Steelers recently finished second in the sixth annual Colorado Triple Crown soccer tournament in Denver.
The tournament included teams from 20 different states who had won state-level competition.
During the event, the Spokane team outscored its opposition 31-3, winning pool games 11-1 over Minnesota, 5-1 over New York, 4-0 over South Dakota and 8-0 over Wyoming.
It beat Fresno 3-0 in the semifinals before losing to Sacramento 1-0 for the championship.
Team members include North Side residents Matt Trainor, voted team MVP, Jay Estey, Justin Hanks, Ryan Loft, Joey Meier, Jake Moug, Spencer Ramsay, Sam Stoner, Jesse Volesky, Kevin Walters, plus Ryan Hartshorn, Steven Wells, Tommy Basenberg, Ronnie Sanders and Josh Proctor, who along with Moug was invited to join a travel team to Mexico.
Coaches are Bryon Walters and Randy Stoner.
The Steelers have been invited to the Florida Triple Crown tourney in October.
