Fernan District Opens Cutting Area

Firewood cutters now can gather wood in the Deception Creek area of the Fernan Ranger District.

Wood cutters need a permit and fire safety equipment.

To reach the newest wood-cutting area from Coeur d’Alene, go around Fernan Lake to the Fernan Saddle. Continue on Forest Service Road 612 to the end of the pavement on Windy Ridge.

Keep going to Five Finger Saddle. From the saddle, three roads take off to the right. All lead to new woodcutting areas.

The Idaho Panhandle National Forest also has made one change to the firewood program. Wood cutters no longer are allowed to gather firewood from paved roads.
