Top-seed Michael Chang, the defending champion, faces 11th-seed Brett Steven of New Zealand in one of today’s semifinals of the Legg Mason Classic in Washington, D.C. Petr Korda faces unseeded David Wheaton in the other semifinal.

Ray Mercer will not fight Andrew Golota in a heavyweight bout Aug. 16 because of a neck injury that will be operated on Monday at a New York City hospital.

Joe Nemechek earned the pole and a qualifying record for Sunday’s Pennsylvania 500. In his Chevrolet, he turned a lap of 168.881 mph at Pocono International Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. Spokane’s Chad Little’s lap of 164.938 was not fast enough to qualify.

The University of Houston selected Chet S. Gladchuk as its athletic director, the same position he held at Boston College last season when its football program was hit with a gambling scandal.
