Neagle Ties Maddux At 13

Denny Neagle joined teammate Greg Maddux as the N.L.’s only 13-game winners so far this season and Andruw Jones hit a two-run homer Friday, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers.

Neagle (13-2) threw a five-hitter over eight innings to beat the youngest pitcher in the majors, 20-year-old Dennis Reyes.

Neagle allowed only one runner past first until the seventh, when Raul Mondesi led off with his 19th homer.

The Atlanta left-hander wasn’t rattled after losing his shutout, retiring six straight hitters before he was removed for a pinch-hitter. Mark Wohlers worked the ninth for his 24th save.

The Dodgers had been on an offensive roll this month, outscoring their opponents 94-54.

Mets 4, Reds 3 New York

Joe Crawford relieved Bobby Jones following a 1-hour, 28-minute thunderstorm delay and got his first major-league victory.

Crawford (1-1) pitched 4-1/3 innings after replacing Jones, who gave up a homer to Ed Taubensee in the second inning before the game was delayed.

Cardinals 6, Giants 5 St. Louis

San Francisco’s Stan Javier, forced to make a rare start at first base after J.T. Snow scratched his eye, made a two-run throwing error that helped St. Louis win.

Ron Gant homered as the Cardinals beat All-Star Shawn Estes (12-4) and broke a six-game home losing streak.

Phillies 8, Pirates 6 Philadelphia

Mickey Morandini’s three-run double capped an eight-run sixth inning that rallied Philadelphia.

Mark Leiter (5-10) struck out a season-high nine and allowed six hits and three runs in six innings for his first win since May 20, ending a six-game losing streak.

Ricky Bottalico pitched the final two innings for his 16th save.

Astros 2, Expos 0 Montreal

Ramon Garcia pitched eight scoreless innings to outduel Pedro Martinez.

Garcia (4-7) scattered six hits, struck out six and walked two before leaving for a pinch-hitter.

Martinez (11-5) struck out nine, allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings and saw his N.L.-leading ERA rise slightly from 1.62 to 1.67.

Padres 5, Marlins 3 Miami

Armando Romero, a 10-year minor leaguer brought up this week, homered in his first major league start.

The Padres won their fifth straight road game, overcoming Edgar Renteria’s two solo home runs. Renteria had his third consecutive three-hit game.

Chicago The game between Colorado and Chicago was postponed by rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

Clearing the bases

San Francisco’s Darryl Hamilton extended his hitting streak to 12 games, the Giants’ longest this season. … Marlins manager Jim Leyland injured his right ankle and right knee when he fell in the bathroom near the dugout during their game in Miami. … San Diego’s Tony Gwynn went 1 for 5, dropping his average to .395.
