New Varieties To Be Offered At Annual Iris Society Sale

The Town and Country Iris Society is having its annual sale next Saturday at University City Shopping Center.

About 1,000 iris plants will be offered for sale, all priced at $1 each, according to Barb Midkiff, club spokeswoman.

“These are all tall, bearded iris, but we won’t have any old-fashioneds,” Midkiff said.

“These are new varieties. We’ll have the pinks and peaches and royal blues, with fringe and ruffles. They’re gorgeous - the kind you might pay $35 for.”

The club stages the sale as a way to introduce more people to the hobby of iris gardening, Midkiff said. Proceeds from last year’s sale were used to buy books on irises and iris gardening for the Valley library branches, she said.

Members have not yet decided how to spend the money raised this year.

The sale begins at 9:30 a.m. and will continue until the stock is completely sold out. Midkiff said the sale typically runs until late afternoon.

Members of the organization will be on hand during the sale to answer questions.

West Valley SCOPE meeting

Election of officers is on the agenda for West Valley SCOPE’s monthly meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Millwood Town Hall, 9103 E. Fredrick.

State Rep. Mark Sterk, R-Spokane Valley, will be the guest speaker. Sterk, a Spokane Police Department sergeant, recently announced that he will run for Spokane County sheriff in 1998.
