Sabres Hire Ruff

Compiled From Wire Services

Lindy Ruff, former captain of the Buffalo Sabres, was hired as coach of the team. He replaces Ted Nolan, the NHL coach of the year, who refused a one-year contract extension.

Ruff, an assistant with the Florida Panthers since the 1993-94 season, received a multiyear contract. General manager Darcy Regier cited a relationship with Ruff that went back 20 years, something he did not have with Nolan.
