Lost Opportunity Gets Teamsters’ Goat

Associated Press

The next time Mills College wants to hire a herd of goats to clear brush, they better have union cards.

The Oakland school paid the owner of “Goats R Us” to have 500 of the four-legged workers do the brush-clearing job, and that got the Teamsters’ goat.

The college has a work agreement with the union and should have dispatched Teamsters for the task, said Chuck Mack, secretary-treasurer of the local.

To resolve the problem, Mack suggested that the goats could join the Teamsters.

In a tongue-in-cheek response, the Teamsters said unionized goats couldn’t work 24 hours a day without being paid overtime.

“Additionally, our rules do not allow a member to work in more than one classification at a time. The college should, therefore, no longer expect goats to eat and fertilize simultaneously.”
