Cannons Take Lead In Aaa Championship Series

The Cannons took a 1-0 lead in the championship series of the AAA American Legion playoffs, defeating the Blue Devils 7-6 Friday at Shadle Park.

Ben Miller went 3 for 3 and Jeremy Isherwood drove in three runs for the Cannons.

Eric Hayden hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for the Blue Devils.

The second game is scheduled for 4 p.m. today at Shadle Park. A third game, if necessary, would be played at 6 p.m. Sunday at Gonzaga University.

Spokane Athletic Supply scored eight runs in the sixth inning at Central Valley to defeat Hess/Wheeler 12-8 and even their AA American Legion playoff series at one game apiece.

The deciding game will be played today at 8 p.m. at Gonzaga University and the winner will advance to play either the Panorama Twins or PAC of Clarkston for the championship. That best-of-3 series begins with a Sunday doubleheader at Shadle Park.

For SAS, Mike Tasca was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, as was Ryan Nelson.

Hess/Wheeler’s Ryan Pugh went 3 for 5 and held Spokane Athletic to four runs through five innings.

Jeff Crouch and Jared Wilson ripped two-run doubles for SAS in the sixth.

The result of Friday’s Twins-PAC game was not available at press time. The Twins led the series 1-0 after their 11-2 victory Thursday. A deciding game, if necessary, is scheduled for 6 p.m. today at GU.

Wrestling

One area teenager won his division and another placed second at the Junior and Cadet National Wrestling Championships in Fargo, N.D.

Tommy Owen of Coeur d’Alene won the 94.5-pound title for 15-16-year-olds.

Owen will be a freshman at University High School in the fall.

Travis Pascoe, who is transferring from Rathdrum, Idaho, to attend Gonzaga Prep in the fall, was second at 165 pounds for 15-16-year-olds.

Golf

Jason Allred, 17, of Ashland, Ore., will face Chris Zeller, 17, of Boca Raton, Fla., in one semifinal of the 50th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, at Newtown Square, Pa.

Trevor Immelman, a 17-year-old South African, and Sean O’Hair, 15, of Scottsdale, Ariz., are the other semifinalists.
