Gu Award Honors Valley Christian Principal

Nina Culver Correspondent

Graduation day was a big event for Velva Myers.

The elementary principal at Valley Christian School was receiving a master’s degree in education and curriculum from Gonzaga University in May when she was surprised to also receive the university’s 1996-97 Ignatius Loyola Magis award.

“I was shocked,” Myers said. “I felt a lot of other people could have deserved it, but I’m pleased they picked me. It’s an honor, I know that.”

The award is given to two people each year and is the top award for graduate students. The citation for the award reads, “The recipient of this award is distinguished among his or her peers for doing more than is expected and by an integration in which scholarship, service, and leadership enhance each other.”

Myers said the award affirmed the path she has chosen to follow and has made her more confident in herself.

“It did make me believe in my qualifications and abilities,” she said. “It was like a stamp of approval.”

Now, Myers said, she feels the Lord has a special plan for her, even though she doesn’t know what it is.

“I feel the Lord led me though this” and did it for a reason,” said Myers. She didn’t tell a lot of people about the award, but word is getting out. “I didn’t want to be prideful about it,” she said.

Myers said she looks forward to continuing her work at the school and her two hours a day of teaching. “I love teaching and I love kids.”
