Martinez Tops Seles

Conchita Martinez, who had never won a set in 11 previous matches against Monica Seles, defeated her nemesis 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to reach the semifinals of the Bank of the West tournament in Stanford, Calif.

Martinez advanced to a semifinal match today against third-seeded Amanda Coetzer. Martina Hingis will play Lindsay Davenport.

Jim Courier ousted two-time champion Richard Krajicek 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in the $303,000 Infiniti Open in Los Angeles.

Top-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia overpowered Byron Black of Zimbabwe, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 to also advance to the semifinals.

Second-seeded Thomas Enqvist of Sweden beat Denmark’s Kenneth Carlsen 6-3, 7-5 and will face France’s Guillaume Raoux, a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 winner over third-seeded Mark Philippousis of Australia.

Frank Parker, U.S. tennis singles champion in 1944 and 1945, has died in Milwaukee. He was 81.

Parker was the 1949 Wimbledon doubles champion with Pancho Gonzales and a five-time Davis Cup team player.
