Woman Faces Charges After Bicyclist Hit

A Spokane woman is facing vehicular assault and other charges after a bicyclist was hit by a car Monday morning and left lying on the road, police said.

Selsa Susan DeJong, 22, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of vehicular assault, felony hit and run and attempting to tamper or destroy evidence of a crime.

The victim, 45-year-old Jerry Scheibner of Spokane, was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center with a broken leg and bruises.

Scheibner, a state Department of Ecology employee, said he was riding his bicycle to work at 7:15 a.m., headed westbound on Empire Avenue near Division Street.

DeJong, headed east, cut him off while making a left turn onto a side street, Scheibner said.

The front bumper of her car hit the bike. Scheibner was thrown onto the windshield, then back onto the pavement, about 15 feet away, he said.

“She stopped, and I said, ‘Please call an ambulance,”’ Scheibner said. “She jumped in her car and drove off.”

Scheibner managed to get the license plate number, which led police to DeJong. She was arrested about three hours later.
