Helicopters Rescue Hundreds More

Compiled From Wire Services

American military helicopters on Sunday ferried out hundreds more foreigners trapped by a military coup, while the mutineers attempted to introduce a measure of order by naming a ruling council.

The appointment of the 20-man council was a sign that the coup leader, Maj. Johnny Paul Koroma, was resisting attempts to negotiate the return of President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah’s civilian government.

Koroma was named chairman of the council, which was dominated by soldiers and included several members of the Revolutionary United Front rebel army, which waged a five-year civil war against the government.
