Area Entries Share Third Place

AA/A Fastpitch

A bizarre State AA/A fastpitch softball tournament ended Wednesday with the area’s three teams all earning third-place trophies.

West Valley finished 2-1 by beating Seattle Prep 3-1 in Game 20 at Yakima Valley Community College’s Larson Field. The Eagles opened with a 7-2 win over Liberty (Issaquah), then lost to Capital of Olympia 11-0 in the quarterfinals.

East Valley and Colville both finished 1-1-1. They met in Game 18, and played 12 innings before the game was halted by rain with the score tied at 1.

The tourney was originally scheduled for last Friday and Saturday in Tacoma, but heavy rain forced postponement. More rain in Tacoma Monday caused officials to move the event to Yakima under an abbreviated format.

WV, EV, Colville, Meadowdale and Gig Harbor were still alive in the consolations, with less than two losses apiece, after Wednesday’s schedule. Those five teams, plus today’s semifinals losers, will share third-place trophies.

Today’s semifinals, at noon, will match Capital vs. Othello and Centralia vs. W.F. West of Chehalis. Winners meet at 2 p.m. for the title.

Darcy Sohns pitched a six-hitter in WV’s win over Liberty. Molly McKinnon and Lacy Magnusson both went 3 for 4 as Capital beat WV in the quarterfinals. The Eagles, with Sohns again on the mound, rebounded by topping Seattle Prep with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

EV opened with a 1-0 loss to Othello, as Rebecca Triplett struck out 10 but allowed Danielle Worsham’s RBI triple in the fourth. The Knights stayed alive by beating Lindbergh 4-2, with Triplett striking out seven, Tricia Stookey driving in two runs and Ashley LeGrant finishing 2 for 3.

Stookey doubled home Becky Musgrave in the first inning of EV’s tie with Colville. The Indians also scored in the first, on a throwing error. Terra DaCorte struck out 14 in 11 innings for EV. Colville’s Tarrah Brown fanned eight in 12.

Colville began with a 5-0 win over Monroe, as Tiffany Tripp, Jamie Entwistle, Heather Brown and Carissa True had two hits apiece to support Brown’s two-hit pitching. Stacey Smith had two triples and three RBIs and Steffany Calkins was 2 for 2 as Centralia one-hit Colville 11-0 in the quarterfinals.
