Giving To Community North Central Specialty

Noreana Emery-Cloy North Central High School

‘Choice, not chance, determines human destiny.” This was the motto for North Central’s graduating class of 1997. Unlike the often unneeded and unremembered mottos of the past, ours will always be remembered for its appropriateness to our class.

We made choices throughout the year that impacted our high school career, the community around us and the rest of our lives.

As seniors, it would have been very easy to float through our last year of high school. Instead, we made a positive choice to make a difference in people’s lives in our area.

Giving back to the community is a North Central specialty. Over the past year our school donated units of blood, books, canned food and countless pop-tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. We chose to come together as one to better our community.

We decided to contradict the rumors that North Central is a school full of rough kids and juvenile delinquents, struggling athletes and poor students.

We also chose to take pride in everything we did in the academic and athletic arenas. We had Washington Scholars as well as National Merit and Achievement Scholars.

We had 106 seniors on the honor roll and large numbers of academic letter winners both semesters. Our class also has nine valedictorians who will graduate with perfect grade point averages.

Contrary to popular belief, we’ve also excelled in athletics. Nearly all of our teams have improved upon their records from last season. Gymnasts, wrestlers and cross country runners all competed on the state level and track athletes are following in their footsteps. Not bad for a bunch of street kids and criminals, wouldn’t you say?

If choices, not chance, determine human destiny, then a worthwhile future must lie before us, North Central’s Class of 1997.
