Lakeside’s Petticrew Selected In 31st Round By Kansas City Royals

Right-handed pitcher George Petti crew of Lakeside High was selected Wednesday by the Kansas City Royals in the 31st round of major league baseball’s amateur draft.

Petticrew, 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, was 6-0 with 78 strikeouts and a 1.88 earned-run average for the Eagles in Northeast A League games. The Royals selected Northwest Christian left-hander Jeremy Affeldt in the third round Tuesday.

GU’s Barney delivers son

Gonzaga University women’s basketball coach Kellee Barney gave birth Tuesday to a 9 pound, 20-inch boy, Jarryd Michael Barney.

Shadow’s Barton called up

Kieran Barton, midfielder for the Spokane Shadow, played 21 minutes in an exhibition game with the Seattle Sounders Wednesday night against the San Jose Clash of the Major Soccer League. The Sounders won 1-0 in a shootout.

Merkel memorial service Monday

A memorial service for longtime Spokane Youth Sports executive director Dwight Merkel, who died Tuesday, has been scheduled for Monday. The 7 p.m. service will be held in the Hennessey/Smith Funeral Home, 2203 N. Division St.
