A-Rod’s Big Night Turns Cashmere Woman Into A Millionaire

Associated Press

When Seattle’s Alex Rodriguez hit for the cycle in the Mariners’ 14-6 victory over Detroit Thursday, a Cashmere, Wash., woman hit the jackpot.

Pamela Altazan won a promotion in which participants who fill in entry forms at supermarkets have a shot at winning $1 million if a Mariners player hits for the cycle.

Altazan was announced as the winner after Rodriguez doubled in the ninth inning to add to his earlier triple, home run and single.

Afterward, Mariners officials tried but failed to reach Altazan by telephone. A phone message left at her home by The Associated Press wasn’t immediately returned Thursday night.

The only other time in the Mariners’ 21-year history that a player has hit for the cycle was June 23, 1993, when Jay Buhner achieved the feat.

The promotion is run by a company called Promotivation. Sponsors put up the money.

Participants fill out entry forms in stores at no cost and mail them in. Before each Mariners game, a name is randomly selected.
