Body Of Missing Hunter Found

The body of a hunter missing since last November was found by members of a search team, the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Department reported Sunday.

The death of George Saunders is still under investigation and an autopsy is planned, the sheriff’s department reported. The body was found in the Cougar Creek Drainage area with the help of the U.S. Forest Service and the Mountain West Rescue Dogs club.

The Pinehurst man had been hunting with his stepson near Enaville when his truck rolled down an embankment. Stepson Mike Brown told authorities that Saunders left to get help.

Eventually, 35-year-old Brown left too, making his way out of the woods to the Enaville Resort the next day.

As many as 45 people searched the frozen woods, looking for Saunders last winter. Volunteers brought dogs. Some brought snowmobiles and four-wheel drive vehicles to scour the steep, mountainous terrain.

The search was called off after a week of freezing weather, during which November’s ice storm hit.
